In the exciting field of robotics, innovation is limitless. Leading the way is Desert WAVE (Women in Autonomous Vehicle Engineering). Founded in 2018 by the Si Se Puede Foundation in partnership with Arizona State University, this all-women's team is breaking barriers in autonomous vehicle engineering. Their focus on designing and developing autonomous underwater vehicles has earned them significant recognition, particularly in RoboNation’s International RoboSub Competitions.

Desert WAVE's journey began with its first robot, Phoenix, a name that symbolizes triumph over challenges. When Phoenix debuted in 2018, it made an immediate impact. The team earned top honors across the United States and claimed third place in the global competition. This achievement was not just a display of skill; it reflected the dedication and creativity of a team striving to succeed in a male-dominated field.

Building on the success of Phoenix, Desert WAVE has developed their next robot, Dragon. This new creation is not merely a revision; it is a significant leap forward in capability. Dragon comes equipped with enhanced features such as object manipulation and the ability to deploy small torpedoes. The key advancement of Dragon is its improved sensors, allowing it to detect and interact with underwater objects with improved accuracy.

Desert WAVE exemplifies the power of innovation, diversity, and tenacity. With their achievements, particularly the advancements seen in Dragon, they are pioneers in the field of robotics. Their story encourages countless individuals—especially women—to pursue careers in STEM. As they advance their mission, they not only enhance their own positions but also pave the way for a more equitable and inclusive future in engineering and technology.
