In a groundbreaking moment for both innovation and representation, the all-women Desert WAVE team clinched victory at the 27th International RoboSub Competition. Competing against 40 teams from eight countries, this talented group of students and recent graduates from Arizona State University made history as the first all-female robotics team to win a world championship. Their triumph brings to light the essential contributions that women can make in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
The team controlled two underwater robots named Dragon and Baby Dragon, which performed a series of complex tasks during the competition. Their success highlighted not only their technical skills but also their creativity and teamwork in overcoming the challenges presented.
A key component of Dragon's success was its advanced guidance system powered by a Nortek DVL1000 (Doppler Velocity Log). This sophisticated technology enabled the robot to navigate effectively to each task location, ensuring optimal performance throughout the competition. The DVL1000 provided precise velocity data, which allowed the robots to adjust their movements dynamically, increasing their accuracy.
