Arizona State University’s award-winning robotics submarine team, Desert WAVE, is making an impressive mark amid the challenges brought on by COVID-19. The women’s autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) team is set to compete in their second International RoboSub Competition, taking place virtually in August 2020.

Their journey took an exciting turn after an outstanding performance in the 2019 competition, where they were the highest placing U.S. team. Desert WAVE was eager to return to San Diego, California, but the pandemic forced them to rethink their approach. Rather than losing momentum, this resilient team has demonstrated that creativity and collaboration can thrive even in difficult times.

To keep the production of their submarine on track, the team adapted swiftly. They relocated their 3D printer from the Polytechnic campus to a team member’s home. This strategic move allowed them to continue innovating and creating essential parts for their AUV. Each student utilized SolidWorks, a 3D computer-aided design software, to develop components. This showcases their dedication and technical prowess. For instance, they designed a streamlined hull that increased buoyancy by 15%, enhancing the vehicle's performance in water...Read more about the interview at ASU robotics team Desert WAVE prepares for second competition
